Logistics is a very diverse sector, integral to pretty much every part of modern society. Logisticians make sure that goods get to where they need to be, when they need to be there. Within an organisation they develop relationships with suppliers and clients, ensure that products are in the right place at the right time, understand the needs of their customers, and actively seek more effective, cheaper and faster ways to transport products.

If you are thinking of pursuing a career in logistics, here are some points that you should consider.

1. Fast sector growth
There are more jobs in logistics than ever, with experts anticipating that the sector will continue to grow in the coming years. Experts in the Irish Exporters Association estimate that an additional 15,000 skilled workers in the freight transport, distribution and logistics sector will be needed by 2020. This will add to the already 50,000 strong workforce in this area.

2. Good salary
There is a variety of roles within the logistics sector, with salaries dependent upon experience. Logisticians with a number of years' experience can command salaries of up to €70,000 and more.

3. Plenty of job opportunities
Unlike careers in law, medicine or finance, for example, logistics tends to be a career that flies under the radar for many graduates and school leavers. This, coupled with the importance of the sector, means that there are lots of roles that need filling and lots of opportunities to progress quickly within the industry.

4. No degree necessary
Logistics is a role that suits a particular type of intelligence and mindset, which means that employers tend to look for skills and experience. While many employers will want logisticians to have an undergraduate degree in certain cases of medical device and pharma companies, further education is not necessary to pursue a career in the industry.

As so many different industries and organisations are dependent upon logistics, taking a role in the sector can mean working in any number of locations. From an office to a factory floor or a delivery centre, your daily workplace could take any form. There could also be opportunities for overseas travel through business trips to visit clients or review supply chains.

In the US, logistician rated number six in the US News & World Report Best Business Jobs, while in 2020 the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) found that 79% of those working in logistics were satisfied with their jobs.
